The very first retaining walls were not constructed out of some high polymer compound specifically formulated for maximum durability. They were not generally built out of piece after piece which looked like they were stamped out from a cookie cutter. No, stone retaining walls were some of the first used to keep soil from entering unwanted places. With their unique looks and exceptional durability, stone retaining walls have gained numerous fans throughout the centuries, and are certain to gain some more as people begin to realize they want a retaining wall that has its own unique appeal.
You should begin constructing any stone retaining walls on your property by determining exactly where you want them to go. This can be done by marking off the area with a shovel and then fencing it off with stakes and string. After you have completed the design part of the wall, you should dig down a few inches in the area you have marked off. This lowering will ensure your wall is completely stable and will give it an added attractiveness, so it looks like it is not simply resting on the ground, but a part of the ground itself. Once all of this is done, be sure to level your work area and then you can begin to lay the stones which will make your stone retaining walls. To make sure your wall can stand the test of time, you will want to start by putting the larger stones out first and stacking smaller stones on top of them. If there are large gaps between the stones, fill them in with either smaller stones or some type of mortar.
As your stone retaining walls begin to grow, you should fill in behind the wall with an ample amount of dirt. Also, as you pile each layer one atop the other, it is a good idea to tilt them slightly inwards for extra stability. In a few hours time (depending on the length of the wall) your retaining wall will be finished and you can add the rest of the soil to the area you wish to retain. There is no need to worry about the added weight of the extra soil toppling the wall, as the force of gravity pulling down on the stones is enough to keep stone retaining walls safe and secure.
