So you have finally decided to build that boulder retaining wall you have been thinking about all winter. Now that it is finally warm enough outside to do some projects, you run up to the rock yard to order some boulders for your new wall. Following your order, you head over to the hardware store to pick up some dirt you were going to use for that new wall-enclosed garden. Once you have all of your materials assembled, it is time to start building your new boulder retaining wall.
The first thing you will want to do when building your own boulder retaining wall is to mark off the areas where the wall will be built. You should do this so you can get a rough idea of how many boulders you will need and how they should be dispersed over the area of your wall. When you have mapped out the area where the boulder retaining wall will go, you should then determine exactly how high you want your wall to be. If you have chosen to construct the wall yourself or with the help of some neighbors (or your children), then you should consider building a shorter wall. This is incase of the possibility that your do-it-yourself wall may not be as strong as a professional’s wall. Nonetheless, once you have determined exactly how tall, how deep and how long your wall should be, you will want to mark off all of the dimensions with string so you will not accidentally forget where everything was supposed to go.
After all of the measurements are complete, you can begin the final preparatory steps before you can build your boulder retaining wall. First, you will want to be sure to grade and flatten all of the dirt in the area which the wall will surround and the area underneath where the wall will go. Be sure to dig down several inches in the area where you want your boulders to go, as it will add stability and make your wall look much more aesthetically pleasing. Once everything is level, you can begin setting the boulders in the area which was stringed off. After you have finished placing the first row of boulders, add some soil behind the wall to give it plenty of support. You can finish building your boulder retaining wall by adding row by row of boulders and subsequently adding dirt behind them.
