Brick Retaining Walls Are both Attractive and Useful to Enhance Your Landscape

Of all of the different retaining walls available, brick retaining walls are by far some of the easiest to build. Unlike boulder or stone retaining walls, you do not need to lay all of your materials out to determine which pieces will fit best with each other before you begin to build. Brick retaining walls are so easy to build because you automatically know that each and every brick is designed to fit next to one another. Also, if one brick is oddly shaped, you can always apply a little extra mortar to make up the difference. Alternately, if you are building a simple gravity brick retaining wall, you can simply throw the misshapen brick away, as bricks are cheap and easy to find replacements for. Also, with brick retaining walls, you will give your home an elegant air, making your landscaping look suitable enough for a king.
Brick retaining walls are most easily built in the gravity style. A gravity style retaining wall is one which uses the force of gravity to keep the soil behind the wall. If you wish, you can always construct a brick and mortar wall, but due to the do-it-yourself nature of this project, you will not want to make your wall any higher than three feet, since a wall any higher than that runs the risk of becoming extremely unstable in harsh winter conditions.
When you start building your first brick retaining walls, you will want to mark off the exact areas where you want your wall to go. Once you have mapped out an area, head over to your favorite hardware store and pick up some bricks. There are also interlocking bricks available now too, so if you want an easier (or more secure) build, then you should be sure to look into those. After you have assembled all of your supplies, head home and dig a small hole in the area where you want your wall to go. Brick retaining walls look more elegant and have more durability if they are slightly sunken into the ground. Once you build your wall, remember to lean the bricks inwards so they can more efficiently hold back the soil. Also be sure to backfill with soil after each layer of brick has been applied.
